Claude Opus 5.5 is the first model in Anthropic's Claude 5.5 family, released on September 22, 2026. Anthropic positions it as the default starting point for most workloads and says it performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work. It accepts text and image input, returns text, and supports a 1M-token context window with up to 128K output tokens. Thinking is adaptive and always on, steered by the effort parameter (default medium), and a fast mode offers up to 2.5 times the output speed. On Anthropic's numbers it scores 66.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (Fable 5.1: 55.8%, Opus 5: 52.3%), 54.4% on FrontierCode v1.1, 57.8% on CursorBench 4.0, 81.8% on OSWorld 2.0, and 1846 Elo on GDPval-AA v2.1, which Anthropic summarizes as leading in agentic coding, computer use, and knowledge work. Its reliable knowledge cutoff is June 2026. It fits large code migrations, multi-step agent loops, computer-use automation, and document-heavy analysis where a long context and sustained reasoning matter.
