GPT-6 Sol is the middle tier of OpenAI's GPT-6 family, launched on September 22, 2026 together with GPT-6 Luna. It builds on the advances behind the flagship GPT-6 Astra and is meant to make that intelligence more efficient: OpenAI positions Sol for complex work such as coding and agentic workflows, and Luna for high-volume tasks with a clear goal. The model accepts text and images and returns text, with a 1,050,000-token context window (up to 922,000 input tokens) and up to 128,000 output tokens. Reasoning effort is adjustable across none, low, medium (the default), high, xhigh and max, and the model supports structured outputs, function calling and the Responses API tool set, including web search, file search, code interpreter and computer use. Its knowledge cutoff is April 20, 2026. On OpenAI's internal factuality evaluations based on real-world conversations, GPT-6 Sol makes about half as many mistakes as its predecessor, reaching Astra-level reliability. It fits agentic coding, long-horizon software engineering, and business automation where Astra-class quality is needed.
