GPT-6 Luna is the efficiency tier of OpenAI's GPT-6 lineup, launched on September 22, 2026 alongside GPT-6 Sol. OpenAI says Sol and Luna bring much of the strength of GPT-6 Astra into faster, more affordable models, with improvements over their GPT-5.6 counterparts in alignment, writing quality, and responsiveness. OpenAI describes Luna as its most efficient model for focused, high-volume tasks. Luna accepts text and image input and returns text, with a 1,050,000-token context window (922,000 tokens of input) and up to 128,000 output tokens. Reasoning effort runs from none through low, medium (default), high, xhigh, and max, and the model supports streaming, structured outputs, function calling, and prompt caching. Its knowledge cutoff is May 18, 2026. It fits latency-sensitive and high-throughput workloads such as chat, document summarization, information extraction, classification, and lightweight agent steps, with higher effort settings available when a task needs more reasoning.
