Thinking Machines

Maker of the open-weights Inkling model family.

Thinking Machines Lab is a research lab founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, building models it publishes with open weights rather than behind an API alone. Inkling, released in July 2026, is its first model trained from scratch: a mixture-of-experts transformer with 975 billion total parameters and 41 billion active per token, pretrained on 45 trillion tokens of text, images, audio and video. The lab positions Inkling less as a leaderboard entry than as a base worth customizing, with adjustable thinking effort and a deliberate habit of flagging uncertainty instead of guessing.
