At Opper, our mission is to accelerate adoption of Generative AI by making it simpler to build production grade reasoning applications, agents and features. Our goal is to create a simple, modern API platform and associated tools that empower developers to easily turn ideas into reality – from experiments to polished, safe, and powerful AI-driven features in production.

The Future of Software with Generative AI

From 2012 to 2022, our team founded and built Unomaly—a solution that innovated how to monitor complex applications using machine learning and anomaly detection. The resulting algorithms made sense of messy log data, spotlighting anomalies for developers for quick action. Today, thousands of companies use this technology. It also set a new benchmark for anomaly detection, inspiring a wave of similar capabilities across the industry.

Last year, with the founding of Opper, we recognized that Generative AI is pushing us into an era where code is not only a static set of files with embedded logic — it's becoming a smart machine that can act on its own, make choices, generate results, and in the end, complete more types of work than previously thought possible. As our applications get smarter, mastering and understanding its behavior will be more important than ever. Delegating tasks to AI in a safe, flexible and powerful way, will be critical for successfully running AI in production.

The Challenges of a New Software Stack

AI offers great opportunities for development teams and businesses to build new powerful and effective experiences, but it is not without its own challenges. Many teams quickly run into roadblocks, partly because this emerging technology is complex at its core, and is also in its infancy.

We’ve identified the following challenges:

• The Necessity for New Infrastructure: Building AI-driven applications now means setting up entirely new infrastructure, such as vector databases, models, and intricate feedback systems, which is a big ask on top of day-to-day work.
• It’s Time-Consuming: Learning the ropes of new methods, which include prompting, chunking, evaluations and other new challenges takes serious time, and with the tech evolving so rapidly, there is a real chance today's hot skills could soon be outdated.
• Building Agents is an Art: The art of building agents and reasoning applications, while making them reliable, often involves a lot of careful tweaking and fine-tuning to ensure everything works predictably.
• Data Privacy: Being at the top of everyone's minds, particularly when sensitive data must be processed by external AI models, while staying on the right side of compliance and terms of service.
• Costs, quality, and speed: Finding that sweet spot between affordable implementations and the top tier, low latency experience which users expect can be challenging.
• Restrictions: Europe poses its own set of hurdles, with scarce resources for AI development and tight compliance regulation, while trying to obtain the best models.

Our take is that many of these issues have emerged as a result of first-gen Generative AI APIs. We believe that a more advanced API, built with the current state of the art, could address many of these challenges.
